Monroe County Historic Preservation

The Historic Florida Keys Foundation receives ongoing financial support from Monroe County, in exchange for assisting their Historic Preservation program.

The Tavernier Historic District was officially designated in August 2005, an exciting development following a recommendation of the Tavernier Livable CommuniKeys (LCP) Master Plan. The County Commission also adopted locally appropriate design guidelines, based upon the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Throughout this process, Historic Florida Keys staff provided extensive comment and technical advice, and funded a booklet about the history and architecture in Tavernier’s Historic District.  Click here for a PDF version: Discovering Tavernier.pdf.zip

Historic Florida Keys Foundation staff also traveled with a delegation from Monroe County to Tallahassee to advocate for the preservation of the Old Seven Mile Bridge. This historic link between Knight's Key and Pigeon Key has been repaired and preserved and is once again open to the public.
